Affalterbach, 12 December 2012 – This season has been a highly successful one for the PETRONAS Syntium Team, clinching its fifth consecutive Super Taikyu Series championship title, as well as defending its 12-hour Malaysia Merdeka Endurance Race (MMER) title. At the annual AMG Customer Sports Season Finale held at AMG’s headquarters at Affalterbach, the PETRONAS Syntium Team was awarded the coveted ‘CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE’ for its achievement in the Super Taikyu Series with their Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 cars #1 and #28. Nobuteru Taniguchi, Fariqe Hairuman and Dominic Ang took the SLS AMG GT3 #1 to overall first with six victories of seven races, followed by sister car #28 of Tatsuya Kataoka, Masataka Yanagida, Melvin Moh and Jono Lester in overall second.
Presented by five-time DTM champion Bernd Schneider – brand ambassador, instructor and test driver for AMG who drove for the PETRONAS Syntium Team at last year’s MMER – this ‘CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE’ award was only given to four teams who attained overall championship wins. In his prize-giving speech, Schneider paid tribute to Dato’ David Wong, team principal of PETRONAS Syntium Team, for his unwavering passion and commitment to motorsports that goes all the way back to 1990. The ‘CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE’ award also comes with a huge banner that will be displayed in the AMG showroom and an inscribed tile that will be mounted in the new ‘Walk of Fame’ at AMG.
Making its debut of the highly sought-after Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 at the 2011 MMER, the PETRONAS Syntium Team successfully inked the books of history by clinching the overall victory, along with third place as well. This marked the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3's first ever victory in long-distance endurance racing worldwide and PETRONAS Syntium Team was rewarded for its achievement with the "Best Racing Performance" award at last year’s AMG Customer Sports Season Finale. Retiring its pair of BMW Z4M cars, the PETRONAS Syntium Team ran its twin SLS AMG GT3 cars #1 and #28 for the full Super Taikyu season this year, including the MMER.
Dato’ David Wong, team principal of PETRONAS Syntium Team, said, "We truly appreciate the recognition given to us by AMG. The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 is a beautiful and sophisticated car, helping us to continue our pursuit of excellence in motor racing. It has been a fantastic year for us at PETRONAS Syntium Team and also for the rest of the AMG Customer Sports teams. This award highlights the hard work that the team has put in and it belongs to everyone who has contributed to the team in one way or another. This would not have been possible without the support of AMG and PETRONAS.”
The Super Taikyu Series was held over six rounds this year, covering circuits in Fuji, Motegi, Sugo, Okayama, Suzuka and Autopolis. Teams had an option to choose between the Okayama round or the 12-hour Malaysia Merdeka Endurance Race at Sepang International Circuit. Winning every round except the second race of the fifth round and this final round, car #1 of Taniguchi, Fariqe and Ang secured the team’s fifth Super Taikyu title in a row at Round 5, before the end of the season.
