Both PETRONAS Syntium Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 cars #1 and #28 hold joint championship lead
This weekend’s race format at Suzuka will be of three 40-minute sprint races
The team reunites after having to race in two different countries at the last outing
Japan, 19 September 2013 – The last race outing for the PETRONAS Syntium Team was full of ups and downs, having faced disappointment at the annual 12-hour Malaysia Merdeka Endurance Race (MMER), which then got overturned with the joy of victory at Okayama for the fifth round of the Super Taikyu Series 2013. Back to Japan to hunt down the sixth consecutive Super Taikyu title, the team will be racing at Suzuka Circuit this weekend for the sixth round of the Series. With both PETRONAS Syntium Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 cars #1 and #28 holding the joint championship lead, the team will be going all out to ensure victory at the next two rounds.

Three weeks ago, the team was running operations in two countries – Japan and Malaysia. Mechanical problems plagued both cars at Sepang and the team was forced to retire early from the race. Elsewhere in Okayama, bad weather conditions threatened, but Tatsuya Kataoka and Fariqe Hariuman managed to overcome the multiple safety car periods and dangerous track conditions to take victory ahead of the ThreeBond Nissan Technical College Nissan GT-R #24.

The race format this weekend will be different from the norm. Serving as a support race to the World Touring Car Championship, there will be three 40-minute sprint races for Super Taikyu. Each driver will get to fight his own race and cumulative points will be added to the overall tally.

Dato’ David Wong, team principal of PETRONAS Syntium Team said, "We are coming towards the end of the season with just two more rounds to go. This season has been a rather interesting one, from a snowed-out cancellation at Sugo, a brand-new track at South Korea, last-minute drama at Fuji and Motegi, to rainy and slippery times at Okayama. Both our cars have equal potential to win the title and it is great to see the motivation between the drivers. We hope for victory again this Sunday.”
