First victory for the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 in Korea

Korea, 26 May 2013 – The PETRONAS Syntium Team created history in Korea once again, scoring a 1-2 finish in the first ever race held at the brand new Inje Speedium 3,880-kilometre circuit. Fariqe Hairuman led the 45-minute sprint race from pole to flag to secure the victory after 29 laps with the PETRONAS Syntium Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 car  #28. Finishing a close second was sister car #1 driven by Melvin Moh, just 0.2 seconds behind. Fariqe also clocked the fastest lap time of 1:35.949, dominating the race throughout and at one point held a gap of almost 30 seconds from Moh.

This is the team’s third time racing in Korea, having scored a victory on every outing. Back in 2000 under the name of Team PETRONAS, the team won the Asian class and finished seventh overall in the Korean Inter-Tec 2000 Touring Car Race held in Pusan, Korea; an invitational Super Taikyu race. The late Malaysian Hairol Azmi Buntat and multiple South African touring car champion Michael Briggs raced in this 150km 50-lap endurance race with a factory-built 230bhp 1,600cc Nismo Nissan Pulsar ZIR that was used for the first time in Korea then. In 2005 under the name Team PETRONAS Syntium Proton, Fariqe beat German driver Franz Engstler and won Race 2 in a Proton Impian for the Asian Touring Car Championship that was held at the Taebaek Circuit.

Dato’ David Wong, Team Principal of PETRONAS Syntium Team, said, "This win is very significant for the team as we now have two Malaysian drivers winning Super Taikyu in Korea 13 years apart. The late Hairol (Azmi Buntat) won for us back in 2000 in our first Super Taikyu race, the Korean Inter-Tec 2000 Touring Car Race, with (Michael) Briggs. PETRONAS Syntium Team celebrates the first race victory at Inje Speedium and also the SLS AMG GT3’s first win in Korea. We have one more race to go in the afternoon and we look forward to a double celebration.”

Race 2 will also be of a 45-minute single-driver sprint race format. Jono Lester will be starting in pole position with the SLS AMG GT3 car #28 and Dominic Ang will be starting in third in sister car #1. Start time is at 3.15 pm local time.

The 2013 Super Taikyu season will be a highly competitive one, seeing a full grid of 45 cars across six classes. The PETRONAS Syntium Team will face six other teams in the eight-car GT3 category, the biggest field for the class ever. With the cancellation of the first round at Sugo, the series will be revised to six rounds, with Korea as the season opener. Thereafter, the series heads to Motegi in July, Fuji and Okayama in August, Suzuka in September and Autopolis in November.

QUOTES

FARIQE HAIRUMAN / No. 28
I’m feeling really good as I’ve achieved my target and created history with the first ever race win at Inje Speedium. I hope to carry this feeling through for the rest of the season. This is my second time in Korea and I won again, which is great. I’m really pleased with the car and it has been performing really well today.

MELVIN MOH / No. 1
It’s a good start for the team with this 1-2 finish as we score solid points for the championship. The first 10 laps were quite good and I was able to fight with Fariqe (Hairuman). After that however, I started to struggle with the car and I made a mistake, causing me to spin at the last corner while trying to overtake a backmarker. We will be changing some things in the car to hopefully help Dominic (Ang) be more comfortable in it for the race later.
