The combined fastest lap times of Tatsuya Kataoka and Fariqe Hairuman put the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 #28 on the front row in P2, qualifying behind the GTNet Advan Nissan GT-R #81. Sister car #1 driven by Nobuteru Taniguchi and Melvin Moh will start in P4.
SUPER TAIKYU SERIES 2013
After a fantastic qualifying result for the Malaysia Merdeka Endurance Race (MMER) 2013 with a front row lock-out, the PETRONAS Syntium Team follows up with another great result from Okayama, where the team is also racing this weekend, at the fifth round of the Super Taikyu Series 2013.
The weather is Okayama was cloudy all day, with threats of a typhoon. Light rain fell during the start of Driver A qualifying but stopped as quickly as it started. The combined fastest lap times of Tatsuya Kataoka and Fariqe Hairuman put the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 #28 on the front row in P2 for tomorrow’s race, qualifying behind the GTNet Advan Nissan GT-R #81. Sister car #1 driven by Nobuteru Taniguchi and Melvin Moh will start in P4.
The three-hour race will start at 1.30 pm this Sunday (local time in Japan).
NOBUTERU TANIGUCHI / SLS AMG GT3 #1
We have been having some brake trouble since yesterday and I had to do my qualifying session in unbalanced conditions. The cornering balance was especially bad, so I tried to do my best. It was tough and I squeezed as much performance as I could out of the car to get that time.
MELVIN MOH / SLS AMG GT3 #1
Again, the Nissan GT-Rs were very quick in qualifying. I am quite happy with my qualifying run although I feel I could have gone quicker. Also, I went off at the end of the back straight after the brake pedals went soft – that was a very scary moment for me. I am looking forward to the race tomorrow and hopefully our car can score a good result and extend our championship points.
TATSUYA KATAOKA / SLS AMG GT3 #28
I missed a good lap cause of the yellow flag and also the backmarkers who were hogging the racing line. If I had pulled off that good lap, my lap time would have been about 0.3 seconds faster, hence that's a shame. Of course I am happy to have topped Driver B qualifying, but it was a pity we did not clinch pole position.
FARIQE HAIRUMAN / SLS AMG GT3 #28
It was very difficult to judge as it started drizzling right before my session. We decided to go out as fast as possible but I could not do a good lap time for my first outing. I came back into the pit and waited for a while before going out again. On the second run I was pushing 100% and I think it was a good qualifying lap as I managed to improved 0.5 seconds. The GT-Rs are fast on this circuit, but we will focus on tomorrow’s race.
DATO’ DAVID WONG / TEAM PRINCIPAL
It is good to be back on the front row, as the GT-Rs have proven to have very quick qualifying pace. I hope the weather will not be too harsh during the race tomorrow so we can have a good one and clinch victories in two different parts of the world, while we also race the Malaysia Merdeka Endurance Race at Sepang.
