PETRONAS SYNTIUM TEAM RECEIVES CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE AWARD FOR THE SECOND TIME AT AMG CUSTOMER SPORTS FINALE 2013
• PETRONAS Syntium Team achieved sixth consecutive Super Taikyu title with the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 #1
• Sister car SLS AMG GT3 #28 finished overall second
• AMG awarded PETRONAS Syntium Team with the ‘CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE’ award
Stuttgart, 15 December 2013 – The 2013 season is a bittersweet one for the PETRONAS Syntium Team and all its supporters around the world. Helmed by Team Principal Dato’ David Wong, the team clinched its sixth consecutive Super Taikyu Series championship title but also announced its retirement at the end of this year. At the annual AMG Customer Sports Season Finale held at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, the PETRONAS Syntium Team was awarded the coveted ‘CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE’ for a second year running. This award recognizes the achievement of the PETRONAS Syntium Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 car #1 in the Super Taikyu Series. Nobuteru Taniguchi, Dominic Ang and Melvin Moh took the SLS AMG GT3 #1 to overall first with sister car #28 of Tatsuya Kataoka, Fariqe Hairuman and Jono Lester in overall second. PETRONAS Syntium Team was the first team to be awarded by AMG back in 2011 and this latest award makes it the most awarded Asian team by AMG with three awards in three years.
Dato’ David Wong, Team Principal of PETRONAS Syntium Team, said, "We are very proud to receive this award from AMG and to have our efforts and achievements highly regarded. Proof of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3’s excellence is seen in its results. This year has been a bumper year for AMG as the SLS won all the major endurance races at Nurburgring, Spa, Dubai and Bathurst. It was a pity we met with mechanical troubles at Sepang or we would have added to that! Meanwhile, I would like to congratulate all the AMG Customer Sports teams – we are connected by one very special car and we share our victories as one family at AMG. PETRONAS and AMG have been very supportive and I am happy yet saddened to retire the team on a high.”
Mercedes-Benz AMG Brand Ambassador Bernd Schneider, who drove for the PETRONAS Syntium Team at the Malaysia Merdeka Endurance Race (MMER) in 2011 and 2013 said, "I'm very sad to hear of David Wong's retirement. I've done two races with the PETRONAS Syntium Team and I enjoyed it very much even though we didn't win anything this year unfortunately. It is a great team with the right spirit and I think it's a shame. I would like to go back to Sepang and win the MMER! I hope he will think about this decision again, because I'm prepared to drive for him again!”
Adding to Schneider’s comments, Mercedes-Benz AMG Customer Sports co-ordinator Thomas Jäger, who also drove for the PETRONAS Syntium Team at this year’s MMER said, "It's a shame that David Wong is stopping motor racing. He has done an incredible job with the SLS programme and was very successful in Super Taikyu, as well as at the MMER last year. We are losing a very professional and good team in the end, but on the other hand, I understand that it is ok to want to have more time after so many years of racing. I wish him all the best and that he will enjoy life apart from racing.”
Making its debut of the highly sought-after Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 at the 2011 MMER, the PETRONAS Syntium Team successfully inked the books of history by clinching the overall victory, along with third place as well. This marked the SLS AMG GT3's first ever victory in long-distance endurance racing worldwide and PETRONAS Syntium Team was rewarded for its achievement with the "Best Racing Performance" award at the 2011 AMG Customer Sports Season Finale.
Retiring its pair of BMW Z4M cars at the end of 2011, the PETRONAS Syntium Team ran its twin SLS AMG GT3 cars #1 and #28 for the full Super Taikyu season and the MMER in 2012 and 2013. For its achievement of the overall Super Taikyu title in 2012 and 2013, the PETRONAS Syntium Team was awarded the coveted ‘CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE’ for two years running at the annual AMG Customer Sports Season Finale.
The Super Taikyu Series was held over seven rounds this year, covering circuits in Sugo, Fuji, Motegi, Okayama, Suzuka and Autopolis, as well as the brand new Inje Speedium track in South Korea. PETRONAS Syntium Team won every round of the Super Taikyu Series this year, displaying its dominance in endurance racing.
